At its most basic, an access point is a network device which provides network access for wireless devices. An access point is essentially a bridge to the ethernet distribution network since it operates at OSI Layer 2 (MAC).
The capabilities of modern access points vary based mainly on the scale of the network where they will be used. Although this is a simple definition, imagine how the capabilities and cost of a single access point designed for home networks are much lower in comparison to capabilities needed to support enterprise networks with tens or hundreds of access points. This causes the access point market to be divided into three main categories: Consumer, Prosumer, and Enterprise.
