Paths

Illustrator's basic building blocks are points and paths. Everything that we create in Illustrator starts from these and expands from there. Paths go by many names: paths, strokes, lines, line segments, or borders; yet they all refer to the same thing. These paths can be straight or curved and they can be open or closed (a shape).

Open Paths Versus Closed Paths

An open path is a line or line segment where both ends of the line are not touching. A closed path is what we know as a shape: a circle, square, rectangle, and polygon are all closed paths.
