Creating Patterns

Creating patterns in Illustrator is a great way to add texture or visual interest to any object. Create and select the artwork that you want to turn into a pattern, then choose 
Object > Pattern > Make. The Pattern Options panel will open and the artwork will appear in the thumbnail window of the panel. If you open the Pattern Options panel before creating a pattern, the panel will be grayed out, which can be confusing. This is why I recommend using the Object > Pattern > Make. You can choose Make Pattern from the Pattern Options panel so the panel options will be active.
