How to do it...

We can create an AMI from an EC2 instance as follows:

1. Go to the EC2 service in the console.
2. Click on Instances, select our instance, click Actions, click Image, and click Create Image.
3. On the Create Image screen, provide a name and description. Use the defaults for the other parameters and click on Create Image:

If we go to the AMI list, our AMI should display its initial Status as pending. Once the Status changes to available, create a new instance from this AMI. While launching the instance, choose our AMI from the My AMI tab.
