16.5 Future Research Directions

Generally speaking, three areas should be further studied to enhance the security level of the grid:

(1) integrity and confidentiality of the transmitted data, (2) building a robust and efficient dis-

patching and management model for a SCADA system, and (3) establishing a universal policy and

standard for secure communication technology. We have also examined the privacy concerns in

the smart grid. To eliminate personal information leakage problems, we believe that state-of-the-

art techniques like anonymity, access control, and accountability might provide solutions. Possible

future research directions may include the following aspects:
