So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Learning about the major types of APIs
There are a few API types. Remote procedure call (RPC) is the one that enables applications to call one or more functions in other applications remotely. XML and JSON are the content types and there are RPC APIs for both XML and JSON. In the web services world, SOAP has been ruling the world with a number of standard specifications for different purposes. But then, due to the extreme complexity, the adoption rate has come down sharply. Now, with the lightweight REST architectural style, every service, application, platform, middleware, and database is exposing RESTful APIs.
