
5 Poly(phenylene sulfide)
Poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) is a polymer which is
composed of a series of alternating aromatic rings and
sulfur atoms. More correctly, it should be addressed as
poly(p-phenylene sulfide). PPS is a high-quality engi-
neering polymer. Compounds containing the −−S−−
group are called thioethers or sulfides. Compounds
containing the −−S−−S−−group are called dithioethers.
Poly(thioether)s should not be confused with
poly(sulfide)s, in that t he term poly refers directly to
the sulfide linkage, i.e., −−S
