Chapter 12, Watch Your House Across the Network
while on vacation, you’ll need to be able to pull up a web browser at an
Internet café and connect to your home computer. Connecting your home
to the Internet has a lot of potential. If you’re coming home early from work
and want to fire up the air conditioning so that it’s cool when you arrive,
remotely accessing your home systems across the Internet would allow that.
You could listen to your home music collection across the Internet, or even
schedule a show to record from your desk at work.
You don’t even need a broadband connection to do this; dial-up can work too.
It’ll be slower, but connecting to your home server won’t be any slower than it is
to browse the web from home.
To enable remote connection through a web server, you need to secure your
system and then install and configure the web server software. If you’re
an Internet geek, you probably already know how to do this. If you’re any
other type of geek, you could probably use some guidance. This section will
teach you the concepts of self-hosting a web server, including understand-
ing DNS, dynamic IP addressing, and security. All the software and services
suggested in this step are free, so you won’t have to spend a dime.
