frees up plenty of bandwidth over the PCI bus for the audio stream as well
as well as the compressed video stream, so you don’t need an additional
audio connection. (See the sidebar for more about the different types of TV
tuner cards.)
8. Finish up
Almost done! Just close the chassis, pop the Windows XP installation CD
into the CD/DVD burner, and start up the machine. Assuming you haven’t
created any new problems since your last POST, it’s now time to install the
operating system.
The Software Platform
Believe it or not, building this HTPC on a base of Microsoft Windows XP
is accomplished entirely with freely downloadable software (if you don’t
count the operating system). In fact, in designing this system, I found the
Windows-based HTPC software to be far less finicky than comparable
Linux software. This project assumes you have Windows installed and
some sort of Internet access.
It’s probably worth noting that the software we’ll be using is community-devel-
oped and changing all the time. There’s a possibility that versions of applications
and drivers mentioned here will no longer be available, although you should be
able to get away with using whatever the current versions are. Both the Windows
