4. Reconnect power and test the switch
Before you screw the switch into the wall, verify that it works correctly.
Return to your circuit breaker and reset the switch to the original position.
If you have a fuse box, replace the fuse. Attempt to turn on your X10 light;
if it doesn’t work, disconnect the power and verify all connections.
X10 switches usually do not operate like conventional switches. X10 toggle switch-
es return to a centered position after being pushed up or down. Other switches
turn the light on or off each time the button is pressed.
5. Configure the switch
You must now select house and unit codes for your switch. For this proj-
ect, we’ll use the address C1. While you’re free to choose any house code
in the A–P range, you should not leave it at the default “A” setting, as this
increases the likelihood that you will have conflicts with your neighbors’
X10 equipment. X10 signals do not usually jump between houses or apart-
ments, but it has been known to happen.
Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for specific directions on configur-
ing your house and unit codes. Usually, you’ll use a screwdriver to twist the
dials for both the house and unit code. Twist the house code dial to C and
leave the unit code dial at 1. If your switch does not have dials to physi-
