Conclusions
Many organizations promote and value teamwork, yet pay people based upon individual accomplishments. Individuals operating under this system feel the tension. Just as college basketball players who feed their teammates instead of shooting will not compile impressive scoring statistics and are less likely to be drafted by the pros, managers who devote energy to organizational goals will often not forward their own career. Viewed in this sense, it is rational for team members to think of themselves first and the team second. The organization that wants otherwise had better “walk the walk”—and the walk involves serious thought about performance evaluation and compensation.
