It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

There are few things you should know before you start working on the MySQL code. To contribute or track MySQL development you should follow the instructions for the installation of source code distribution as per your system or operating system platform. The source code includes internal documentation, which is very important to understand how MySQL internally works from developer's perspective.
