10.1 Force on a conductor, F
A current-carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field has a force
exerted on it where
Force = Bll
where force, F is in newtons
B = magnetic flux density in teslas, T
/ = conductor length in metres, m
/ = current in amperes, A
Example 1 A conductor carrying 50 A is at right angles to a
magnetic field having a density of 0.5 T. Calculate the force on the
conductor in newtons per metre length.
F= Bll
= 0.5 x 1 x 50 = 25 N
