InDesign can hang the punctuation with the click of a button. From the Type menu, choose the “Story” palette. Put a check in the box, “Optical Margin Alignment.” Enter the point size of your type. This will hang punctuation even in the middle of a paragraph, when it’s flush left, flush right, or justified. This applies to the entire story and can slow down the redraw and composition, so only use it when necessary.
QuarkXPress can hang the punctuation of left-aligned type. For repeated instances of hanging indents, use the “Formats” command in the Style menu. For a single instance you can use the key command for “Indent Here,” which is Command/Control \ (backslash).
