alignment

Refers to whether text is aligned on the left (flush left), the right (flush right), on both edges (justified), or centered.

all caps

When you set type in all capital letters.

ampersand

Name of the “&” symbol that stands for the word “and.” The symbol is derived from the Latin word “et,” which means “and.”

apertures

Partially open spaces within letters such as C, G, S, a, c. Fully enclosed spaces, as in the letter O, are called counters.

apex

The top point of a capital letter, such as the peak of a capital A.

arrangement

See alignment.

arm

Horizontal stroke of a letter that is unattached at one end. A capital E has three arms.

ascender

The part of a lowercase letter that rises above the height of the lowercase x.
