Evolutionary Computation
Theory and Paradigms
Previously in this book, we have discussed
mind and evolution, which have been de-
scribed as the two great stochastic systems
in nature. As if to support Bateson’s com-
ment, these two great systems have pro-
vided some of the most exciting challenges
in the history of computer science. Modeling
the information-processing techniques of
minds, of course, was the task of the artificial
intelligence movement. Modeling the pon-
derous adaptive processes of natural evolu-
tion has been an equal challenge, and the re-
