Before I talk you through how to build the ultimate LinkedIn profile, I just want to highlight some of the common mistakes that I often see.
POOR PROFILE PICTURE
Back when I first joined LinkedIn in 2012, it was hard to get a good LinkedIn photo!
Mobile phones didn't have the types of cameras that they do now and professional photographers weren't offering LinkedIn photo shoots. Because of this, a lot of people looked through their photo folder or through their Facebook photos and tried to find the most professional looking photo (nine times out of 10 this was a photo from the last wedding they attended!).
I've seen everything from wedding photos and photos of people at the beach, to one of the worst (and unfortunately also quite common) – a picture of someone holding a pint of beer! Now don't get me wrong, if they are selling beer, then that might work, but most of the time they aren't.
NO BACKGROUND/BANNER IMAGE
Possibly one of the biggest mistakes and a huge missed opportunity is not having any background behind your profile photo. Again, when I first joined LinkedIn the only way you could get a good LinkedIn background was to pay for LinkedIn Premium. Now, however, it is super‐easy to do (I'll show you just how easy in this chapter).
WEAK OR NO SUMMARY
If you only have one or two paragraphs as your summary, again you are missing out. There is a lot more room for text and the opportunity for you to include some key information ...
