In Chapter 9, we used the parallel port interfacing IC 8255 for many applications. is was
done to illustrate the fact that data is available for transfer in the parallel form – so it can be sent
to various external peripherals each of which has specifi c functions. In all these applications,
the 8255 PPI mostly was used as a data transfer intermediary, along with the capability of
generating signals for controlling the individual peripherals.
In this chapter and the next, we will familiarize ourselves with a few more peripheral chips
with specialized applications. e fi rst is the 8253/8254 timer chip.
