In March 2018, Amazon announced it would be venturing into the retail banking business by offering consumer checking accounts. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. That’s right, Amazon is launching consumer banking services such as checking accounts through a partner model. It does not envision becoming a bank today. Classic. It’s interesting to note, however, that the Wall Street Journal described Amazon’s foray into the consumer checking account business as that of a partner, rather than a disrupter.1
