NINETEEN Composition & Orientation

WE ALL VIEW the world from a horizontal perspective. It, therefore, seems rational that we routinely compose our photographs in a similar way perhaps more so out of habit than choice. Many subjects appear to lend themselves to this approach which probably accounts for its dominance, particularly in landscape photography. Horizontal compositions create a feeling of space and balance while vertical arrangements emphasise height and depth. We naturally view photographs from left to right, but we subconsciously analyse vertical arrangements usually from top to bottom. Those coming new to photography often find it more challenging to visualise and compose in a vertical format.
