Device onboarding is essential to scaling the IoT application to support hundreds of IoT devices. Usually, the mechanism is to ship devices or a gateway with a certificate and configurations so that, as part of the activation process, the devices register themselves with the cloud registry; for communication, they usually use the mutual TLS authentication.
