15.9 TWELVE-PULSE VFD DESIGN
Compared with the rarely-used three-phase, three-pulse converter, the three-phase,
six-pulse converter produces low harmonic distortion. It is like a three-pulse con-
verter using a three-phase center-tap transformer, where each of the six voltages is
out of phase by 360/6 = 60°.
The harmonic content in the output ac can be further reduced by pulsing the inverters
12 times instead of six times. Both the 6-pulse and 12-pulse converters (often incorrectly
called 6-phase and 12-phase converters) use 3-phase power mains. The 12-pulse inverter
