Devices
The power electronics devices in electrical power systems basically perform the fol-
lowing functions by periodically switching the current on and off at a desired fre-
quency: (1) convert ac into dc, (2) convert dc into ac, (3) convert frequency, (4) control
ac and dc voltages, and (5) control power without converting voltage or frequency.
The direct or indirect benet of a power electronics controller is system efciency
improvement. Figure 12.1 is a simple example in a process heat control, which can be
