101AC and DC Motors
of 3.14 to a high of 22.4 kVA/hp. A motor with a higher code letter produces higher
stress on the power system design.
Example 4.4
A 100-hp, three-phase, 60-Hz, 460-V, 1710-rpm, four-pole, letter code J, squirrel
cage induction motor with Δ-connected stator has efficiency of 90% and power
factor 0.85 lagging when operating at rated load. Determine the input kilowatt,
kilovolt-ampere, and line current during normal operation and the line current on
direct start in Δ.
Solution:
Output power = 100 hp × 746 ÷ 1000 = 74.6 kW
Input power = 74.6 ÷ 0.90 = 82.89 kW
Apparent power = 82.89 ÷ 0.85 = 97.52 kVA
Line current = 97.52 × 1 ...
