Example 7.2
A three-phase, 100-hp, 460-V, letter code G induction motor is started directly
from 480-V lines. The internal (Thevenin) source impedance and the cable imped-
ance add up to a total of 0.01 + j0.02 Ω/phase. If the starting pf of the motor is
0.35 lagging, determine the exact and approximate voltage drops in percentage
of the line voltage.
Solution:
A letter code G motor draws 5.6 to 6.3 kVA/hp on starting as per Table 4.3.
Therefore, the worst-case starting current is 6.3 × 100 × 1000 ÷ (√3 × 460) =
791A at θ = cos
–1
0.35 = 69.5° lagging. The phase voltage at the source is 480 ÷
√3 = 277.1 V.
