324 Introduction to Electrical Power and Power Electronics
developed around 2000, the GCT has started to replace GTO in high-power
applications.
The MOS-controlled thyristor (MCT), reverse-conducting thyristor (RCT), gate-
assisted turn-off thyristor (GATT), and light-activated SCR (LASCR) are other
examples of specialty devices, each having niche advantage and application.
Figure 12.16 shows the power handling versus switching frequency capabilities of
the most commonly used power electronics devices available to the design engineer
at present, and higher rated devices are emerging in an evolutionary manner.
