Architecture involves a marriage between art and engineering so there is plenty of scope for lateral thinking. There are many examples both at the level of an individual construction building or in an innovation that affected many subsequent buildings. Here are some of my favourites.
The Great Pyramid at Giza, 2600 BC
This monumental construction was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and the only one remaining intact to this day. It was a work of enormous ambition and needed around 15,000 people to labour over 10 years. It used some 5.5 million tonnes of limestone. It remained the largest and tallest building in the world for 3,800 years.
