Windows Server 2008 R2 provides a built-in data protection solution called Windows Server Backup (WSB). Windows Server Backup uses the inbox VSS writers in Windows Server 2008 R2 and can therefore perform a block-level backup and restore.
BLOCK-LEVEL BACKUP
A block-level backup essentially is an entire backup of a disk and is in contrast to a file-level backup. A block-level backup means you get an image of the entire disk!
Windows Server Backup provides some of the normal protection and recovery features of an enterprise backup program. In addition, Windows Server Backup can be extended to support protection and recovery at an application level, if the application provides a VSS-compatible writer.
