I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Boot banks
Looking at the preceding figure, you may notice that partitions 5 and 6 are named Primary Boot Bank and Alternate Boot Bank. What are these two partitions? The quick answer—a fail-safe. The ESXi system has two independent banks of memory, each of which stores a full system image. When a fresh ESXi installation is performed, partition 6 is empty.
During the system upgrade, the new version is loaded into the inactive bank of memory and the updated bank it is set to be used when the ESXi reboots. If the boot process fails for any reason, the system automatically boots from the previously used bank of memory. You can also manually choose which image to use for that boot at boot time .
