Workflow and Professional Media Networks

At a high level, workflow-based solutions focus on what the business wants to achieve rather than focusing on a hardwired technical facility. This chapter presents some of the benefits, challenges and potential new directions for broadcasters considering the deployment of workflow-based solutions.

To aid in the understanding of these systems, let’s start by describing a small portion of a traditional, hardwired master control facility. (See Figure 5.8-1.) In this facility, we receive commercials via a “catch server,” move selected commercials to an on-air server and then play them out according to a predetermined schedule.
