The earliest form of wireless audio delivery employed amplitude modulation (AM). Transmitters used vacuum tubes to generate a carrier upon which audio was impressed by various means with high-level plate modulation being the most popular. AM broadcast signals propagate via groundwave during daylight hours and also via ionospheric reflection during nighttime hours. This reflection causes AM stations to be heard at great distances from the transmission site.
