When I went on the O’Reilly platform, I was astonished to find all the books there, plus live events and sandboxes so you could play around with the technology.I’ve been on the O’Reilly platform for more than eight years. I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Listening
Way back in 1956, Dale Carnegie wrote: ‘You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.’ Most of the time, when people think they are listening, they are in reality interrupting, hijacking the conversation with their own stories, or giving advice. The luxury of hearing the words ‘tell me more’ is a rare gift.
The five levels of listening
I have identified five levels of listening. You can see that in the diagram on the next page, levels four and five are on a par. Level five without level four is not really listening at all.
