4.9 Adaline
The problem with the perceptron is that it doesn’t provide a stable solution if the problem isn’t linearly separable. And to be honest, most problems in real life simply aren’t linearly separable. Thus, an ANN is needed that at least remains stable, even if it can’t solve a task perfectly. In this case, stability means that the ANN doesn’t immediately forget everything it has already learned. Shortly after the development of the perceptron, Bernard Widrow and Marcian Hoff proposed such an ANN they called Adaline, named after the terms adaptive linear. (You may also see these versions of the name: ADAptive LInear Neuron or ADALINE, or ADAptive LInear Element.)
