Our nervous system comprises all the nerve cells in our body. It serves to process stimuli of our organism and leads to reactions to them.
A distinction is made between the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) (see Figure 9.1).

We’re interested in the CNS, which comprises the nerve tracts in the brain and spinal cord. The CNS is well protected in the skull and in the spinal canal of the spinal column.
