The brain (encephalon is ancient Greek, meaning “in” + “head”) is a spongy mass weighing approximately 3.1 lbs, in which the incredible number of around 80-100 billion nerve cells with an average of 1,000 synapses per nerve cell is located. This makes around 100 trillion connections that link neighboring cells, but also cells that are far apart (connectome). Of course, these cells aren’t organized as clusters but in different regions, which are roughly divided into four areas (see Figure 9.2):
