In the 1970s, important approaches emerged that gave ANNs a new boost, especially the training of multilayer networks.

10.4.1 1972: Kohonen – Associative Memory

Teuvo Kohonen presented “correlation matrix memories” in 1972, a model of a special associative memory with linear activation functions and continuous values for weights, activations, and outputs.
