10.5    The 1980s

This decade was characterized by a resurgence of ANNs and the emergence of a large number of different models.

10.5.1    1980: Fukushima’s Neocognitron

An absolute must in the ancestral line of neural network types is the neocognitron by Kunihiko Fukushima, which is based on his cognitron. With his approach, he was the motivator, inspiration, and companion for convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The neocognitron, in turn, was inspired by the models developed by Hubel and Wiesel in 1959. They found two types of cells in the visual cortex, the simple cells and complex cells.
