The mission of a neuron could be described like this: “specialize in excitation conduction and excitation transmission.” Of course, the neuron isn’t alone, but performs various tasks with 80-100 billion other neuron colleagues.
Building on Chapter 1, Section 1.6.1, we want to discuss additional aspects of the cells, so we’ll quickly rush through the basics. Each nerve cell consists of a cell body (soma) and extensions (see Figure 9.4). The extensions that collect signals (excitations) like feelers are called dendrites. The outgoing signal-conducting extension is referred to as an axon or neurite. It can be up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) long and is of course connected to other cells.
