Before we turn to the example of image classification, let’s first establish some order in the terminology: Are we talking about image classification, object recognition, object identification, or even object segmentation?
These terms aren’t used very consistently in the literature, which is why we’re now defining an interpretation for ourselves. Because we’re in the field of image analysis, the best way to explain this is with images.
In image classification, an image is assigned to a class. The class typically denotes the (individual) object that is displayed in the image, that is, the “Scissors” class in Figure 13.2.
