When directors such as Sergei Eisenstein and D. W. Griffith were making some of the first silent features at the beginning of the last century, there were few precedents for how to tell a story with moving pictures. There was no vocabulary of cinema, no language for on-screen storytelling. Concepts such as montage, flashback, crosscutting, fantasy sequence, and dissolve had yet to be discovered.
