How Does NLE Work?

One of the main reasons film and analog video editing used to be so time-consuming is their inescapably linear nature. For instance, to add a shot at the end of a scene, you first have to find the scene, roll through to the end, roll to the beginning of the insert, and either splice the film together or record a new version to tape. A lot of wasted time in the editing suite was spent waiting for the tape (or the film) to shuttle back and forth.
