IMAGE SENSOR

Image Sensor
e image sensor converts light energy passing through the camera lens into a digital
signal. Sensor capacity is measured in megapixels. e most common sensors are CCDs.
However, many cameras, such as Canon and Nikon SLRs, are now employing CMOS
sensors, which share many of the same attributes of CCD types but use less energy. For
more details about image sensors, see Pros and Cons of a DSLR earlier in this chapter.
TIP
e size of the image sensor is not tied to the number of megapixels your camera
records. You can have 12 megapixels of resolution on a compact camera with a small
sensor, or 12 megapixels on a larger sensor in a full-frame DSLR. Generally speaking,
however, the bigger the image sensor in physical size, the better your camera will
perform in low light.
Image Stabilizer
Image stabilization is one of the most important new features added to digital cam-
eras in recent years (along with face detection). is technology helps to offset “soft”
pictures resulting from camera shake. When the image stabilizer is on, your pictures
are often crisper and show more detail. ere are three basic methods for stabilization:
optical, sensor, and digital.
Optical image stabilizer (OIS) Used in both compact cameras and DSLRs, this is
the most common type of image stabilization. Depending on the camera manufac-
turer, you’ll
