compression has been available for years in formats such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and now
MPEG-4. is technology works its magic by storing only the changes from one frame
to another, and not the entire frame itself. is enables much smaller file sizes than un-
compressed formats, which is important when you’re trying to squeeze full-size video
onto a digital camera memory card.
A variation of the MPEG-4 format is H.264, popularized by Apple. is codec delivers
such high quality at low data rates (the same quality as MPEG-2 at one-third to one-
half the data rate and up to four times the frame size of MPEG-4 at a comparable data
rate) that some camera manufacturers are using it for their native movie compression.
Casio is among the leaders in this trend, but others are sure to follow. You can play back
H.264 movies on both Mac and Windows computers using QuickTime or a QuickTime
plug-in.
