If your camera offers both JPEGs and raw files, when do you choose one over the other,
given that you have a memory card large enough to accommodate either? If you have
software that you like for processing raw files, I recommend that format for most of
your shooting. One exception is an assignment when you need long Burst modes, such
as for a sporting event. en you might consider shooting high-quality JPEGs because
they are easier for the camera to process. Also, if you plan to make prints where you
insert the memory card directly into an inkjet printer, you’ll want JPEGs because those
printers can’t process and print raw files.
You might also consider capturing in RAW+JPEG. You can print the JPEGs directly with the
inkjet printer, and then process the raw files on your computer later. is is something to
consider if you have ample memory card space and want to keep all of your options open.
Film Speed
See ISO Sensitivity later in this chapter.
Flash Compensation
is feature, more common on advanced amateur cameras than on basic point-and-
shoots, enables you to manually adjust the flash exposure. Much in the same way that
exposure compensation gives you a tool for fine-tuning your camera’s programmed
autoexposure, flash compensation provides a way to increase or decrease light output
from your flash. So, if your subject is too bright ...
