Wi-Fi technology has been around for some time and is typically used to enable Inter-
net connectivity in coffee shops, airports, and businesses that have hotspot capability.
Soon, sending pictures from your camera might be as easy as sending email from your
computer. Kodak and others have already produced consumer cameras with this tech-
nology built in, and more are sure to follow.
Wi-Fi Transmitter
Some cameras are offering 802.11 wireless connectivity to other devices, such as the
computer, or to services on the Internet. e Nikon Coolpix S51c, for example, allows
you to transfer your pictures via Wi-Fi hotspots (locations where wireless networks
are available) to online resources such as Flickr’s photo-sharing service. Apple’s iPhone
enables you to attach its pictures and send them via email using Wi-Fi or its cellular
network.
e bottom line is that Wi-Fi connectivity frees users from cables and card readers con-
nected to computers, and allows transfer of photos from hotspots all over the world.
Zoom Lenses
Camera makers tend to list two sets of numbers on the barrel of the lens, or on the body
near it. e first set is usually followed by “mm” (which stands for millimeter) and looks
something like this:
5.4–10.8mm or 7–21mm
