Adobe Bridge
Bridge (Mac and Windows) is a file browser that’s bundled with Photoshop CS2 and
later. When you buy Photoshop, Bridge is in the box.
Bridge enables you to upload pictures from your memory card, rate pictures, and add
IPTC metadata and keywords. Even though Bridge doesn’t support image editing, it
does work closely with Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and Photoshop. So, double-clicking
on a thumbnail in Bridge can lead to opening that image in either image editor, then
returning to Bridge once the adjustment has been made.
You can create slide shows on the fly in Bridge, but if you want to save those presenta-
tions to your hard drive, make prints, or build web pages, you have to go through an-
other application such as Photoshop.
Bridge is an appealing organizational tool for many photographers. Photoshop us-
ers already have it loaded on their hard drive, so there is no additional cost. You can
store the images on your computer or an external drive and simply point to them with
Bridge, making it a very flexible tool. You can even use Bridge to browse pictures on
your memory card before actually uploading them to your computer. And because it’s
so tightly integrated with Photoshop and ACR, you can build your own photo manage-
ment workflow with Bridge.
