Chapter 7

Interconnect Prediction Models

Abstract

Owing to the increasing importance of interconnects in advanced CMOS technologies, several models to predict the distribution of wires within an integrated circuit have been proposed. These models have evolved to include multi-tier systems. The majority of these models start from an empirical rule which is broadly known as Rent’s rule. Some of these interconnect models are presented in this chapter. The effect of the vertical interconnections in these models is also described. Based on these stochastic models, predictions for the power, speed, and area of three-dimensional circuits are presented.
