Dial Down the Volume
Sometimes disagreements can be swiftly cooled if we just speak more softly. But usually, next to our adrenaline and blood pressure levels, the volume of our voices is the first thing to rise when we disagree with someone.
Be cognizant of this. Lower your voice at the first sign of tension. Speaking more softly can send the message that you’re not a threat.

In the next few days, observe people interacting. Who in your office speaks softly, but articulately in tense discussions? What effect does that person have on the outcome of the conversation?
