While hamburger menus (menus that are triggered with a button with an icon that looks like a hamburger) are extremely popular, they have been criticized by UX experts because they give no hint about what actions are possible. You have to activate the menu before even knowing what you might click next. Another issue, although mitigated somewhat due to the ubiquity of the hamburger menu, is that some users mightn't even recognize that the hamburger icon represents a menu at all.
