STYLE 4
Burst
The success of this style rides on a kind
of subtle visual complexity.
A burst is nothing more than a star
with a small center and lots of points.
Printing it in a light tint in the back-
ground of your design lends the air of an
official document similar to that of paper
money or a stock certificate.
In contrast, the logo is simple and
bold. Though an acronym (using the
initial letter of each word in the name) is
not the ideal way to name an
organization, it is a common solution,
and this is an attractive way to present it.
PART 2: DESIGN RECIPES
What you need
Simple text and shapes can be produced with a
desktop publishing program such as Adobe InDesign,
Adobe PageMaker, QuarkXPress, or Microsoft Publisher.
Note the small but significant difference
between two similar typefaces. The background
“S” is slightly bolder and sleeker. As in the
previous style, if you’re creating a type logo, it
pays to search for the most interesting typefaces.
The initials are grouped on a four-box
foundation. The same design would work with
three letters, perhaps using the last box for the
spelled out name.
Using a draw program, the parts of the letters
that overlap the edges of the box are cut and
removed.
The defining phrase paragraph and the
company name are sized as if to fill invisible
boxes on the top left and bottom right.
The burst is created using the polygon or star
tool of your desktop publishing or drawing
program. The only difference is that the star,
instead of having the conventional five points,
has 500 points.
